I met one of the Legends in AI!

I had the incredible opportunity to meet one of the living legends in AI—Yann LeCun!!!

Yet, despite my excitement, I might have “messed it up” a little! 😅

Meeting the greatest minds has always been a dream of mine. I'd often wonder:

What would we talk about?

Would I be able to hold a conversation?

Could I intrigue them?

So, meeting someone like Yann LeCun last week felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

For those who may not know, he's a pioneer in the field of AI, Turing Award winner and the Chief AI Scientist at Meta. His work has laid the foundation for modern AI, particularly in deep learning and computer vision. Think ChatGPT, facial recognition, autonomous driving, healthcare diagnostics etc!!!

Here’s how our brief exchange went:

(Yann walks into the waiting room, and I’m there finishing up a call. I can barely believe my luck!)

Me: "Hello, Sir! Huge fan! Could I take a selfie with you?"

Yann: "Sure."

(I take a couple of selfies)

Me: "I’ve been working in AI startups for 5-6 years, and right now, we’re automating reception calls for the Hospitality and Healthcare sectors."

Yann: "Oh, so are you using Llama?"

Me: "Yes, for some use cases."🤦

(I didn’t stop there—and it got worse!)

Me: "Though we still prefer OpenAI for more complex cases, and we’re really looking forward to trying out the next version of LLaMA when it’s out!" 😭

Yann: Nods

(Just then, he was called over for coffee, and i said “thank you sir”)

PS: I should have mentioned that right now fine-tuning LLaMA isn’t feasible for us due to the resource demands. It requires vast amounts of data, multiple rounds of training, testing, building a custom testing framework and at-least one dedicated expert.

So, currently we’ve chosen to focus on building scalable and reliable infrastructure and flow for Voice AI Agents.

PS 2: A friend later mentioned that Yann has advocated for open-source models over proprietary ones like those from OpenAI. So… maybe I stepped in it just a little there.😅

Yann argues that open-source fosters innovation and minimize risks, as opposed to closed models that could hinder progress. He dismisses fears of AI posing an existential threat in the foreseeable future​!

Thanks to his bold stance on the current AI landscape, we’re able to use and fine-tune LLMs locally!!!💪
